A look behind the scenes of how this story came to be . . .
I wrote The Valentine Diary a few years back and after downloading a new Adobe Reader - I hated Version 8 - I decided to read The Valentine Diary again. To this day it still brings tears to my eyes.
For those of you who have read the story, or have yet to read it, I would like for you to know its history.
Driving to work one morning I was doing a call out for stories so that I could enter a writing contest. After I made the call a voice started screaming in my head their story. The strength and the emotion of their voice was so overwhelming that I had to ask them politely to come back when I got to work so I could type down everything that they were saying.
When I do a call out for stories I am actually making that call to the other side. The call is to those who have passed and have a story to tell, whether it is their own of fiction or non-fiction. To this day I cannot tell you if The Valentine Diary actually happened to the girl I heard so strongly was that of fiction or non-fiction. All I know is every time I read it, her story brings tears to my eyes.
She never gave me her name. I did some research but I couldn't find anything that was close to her story. But what I did feel was that getting her story out was her way of trying to walk along that path of peace and forgiveness so that she may go home one day.
The story is dark and full of things that none of us would want to ever imagine happening to anyone we love or care about or don't even know. It is the story that makes the headlines that we wish hadn't. Like the one of Jessica Lumsford, Caylee Anthony, Aarone Thompson, Brandy Hall, Jennifer Kesse, Imette St Guillen, Laura Garza, Tracey Ocasio, Brianna Dennison, Latoyia Figueroa, Taylor Behl and so many others. Many of these I have done readings for and have been correct on. Helping in any form is a good thing. Whether this side of those who can do the investigation of what is heard does so or not is another matter. Hearing those trying to fight back and doing what you can is what God grants us the permission to do. Like the gut instinct of an investigator, it all comes from somewhere with reason.
With her permission I took the diary entries and formed a story around them so the reader could go into her world and fully understand what was happening. The entries are hers and unaltered.
When you read her story you can hear her, feel her pain, her confusion, her anger.
To those who have read her story in The Valentine Diary and wanted to know where such a story could ever come from, may this be your answer.
